The Alarming Rise of Psychotropic Drug Consumption in Belgium: A Critical Health Crisis Unveiled by FPS Public Health

2023-09-18 10:16:49

The FPS Public Health revealed alarming figures today: one in four Belgians consumed psychotropic drugs in 2022, or 3 million patients. For Federal Minister of Health Franck Vandenbroucke, this is a real “health crisis” which must be answered.

Psychotropic drugs are medications used to treat psychological disorders and which act on the central nervous system. We find in particular:

Antidepressants. Antipsychotics (tranquilizers). Benzodiazepines and similar drugs (sleeping pills or sedatives). Psychostimulants.

Taking these medications may sometimes prove necessary, but when this is the case, the doses must be adapted to the patient’s needs and the duration of treatment must be well determined. But according to the authorities, these treatments are often unjustifiably prolonged, poorly monitored and rarely called into question.
