The Alarming Increase in Violent Deaths in Colombia: A Report by Legal Medicine

In the midst of celebrating Halloween night, Yeferson Alexander González was murdered in front of his 3-year-old daughter in the municipality of Soacha, Cundinamarca. The crime was recorded on security cameras and shows how violence does not let up in the streets.

González’s case is part of the 12,682 people who were violently murdered in Colombia between January and November 2023, that is, on average 38 homicides are recorded daily in the country.

The figure comes from the most recent report from the Institute of Legal Medicine and shows how this high-impact crime has had an increase this year compared to the same period in 2022, when 12,045 cases were reported.

The number represents 637 more cases than last year, which represents a percentage variation of 5.29 percent. It is also the largest increase since 2018 – not counting the pandemic years – when an increase of 5.54 percent was reported.

However, the figures from the government of President Gustavo Petro show a slight decrease compared to last year and do not match those of Forensic Medicine, the legally established authority to determine the causes of a death in Colombia.

Making a breakdown of the homicides recorded by Forensic Medicine this year, it appears that 11,763 of the victims were men; while 912 correspond to women.

The report indicates that the majority of the victims (2,413) were between 25 and 29 years old; 438 dead were between 15 and 17 years old; while 39 minors were between 0 and 4 years old.

By capital cities, Bogotá led the indicator, registering 1,011 homicides until last month. They are followed by Cali, with 954; Medellin (345); Cartagena (387) and Barranquilla, with 386. While the cities with the fewest homicides are: Tunja, with 7 and Puerto Carreño, with 8 fatalities.

Other violent deaths

The Forensic Medicine report also gives an account of the other violent deaths that were recorded in Colombia from January to November. The entity reports that those related to transportation events (traffic accidents) also increased, going from 7,432 in 2022 to 7,607 in 2023.

Bogotá leads the number of deaths due to this cause, with 575 cases, followed by Cali, with 278. The figures contrast with cities with fewer vehicles such as Cartagena, which reported 119 deaths due to traffic accidents; Villavicencio, with 119, and Pereira (82).

Deaths due to accidents also increased, going from 3,211 in 2022 to 3,398 in 2023.

Suicides had an exponential growth in 2023. 2,868 were recorded, that is, 10.99 percent more than the 2,584 that occurred in the period analyzed in 2022. This was the violent cause that increased the most.

Regarding ages, 848 cases were recorded in people between 18 and 28 years old, and 732 events occurred in people between 29 and 44 years old. Alarmingly, 19 cases of suicide occurred in minors between the ages of 6 and 11.

The cities most affected by this type of deaths are: Bogotá, with 384 cases; followed by Medellín, with 204 cases; Cali, with 98, and Cartagena, with 51 cases.

Of the violent deaths in the country until November, homicides account for 47.76 percent, transportation events account for 28.65 percent, accidental deaths account for 12.8 percent and, finally, suicides account for 10.8 percent. .

Cases of domestic violence are worrying.

Legal Medicine also provided a report regarding domestic violence, detailing that between January and November 2023, 57,982 cases of this type were registered.
Of these, on a monthly average 5,271 cases were registered, which is 175 per day. The figure represents an increase of 3.79 percent in this type of violence, since in the same period of 2022, 55,864 cases were registered, that is, this year the increase was 2,118 cases.

Of the total of these episodes, 19,177 acts of violence once morest minors, older adults and other family members were recorded. While 38,805 were between couples.

When breaking down the figure for 2023, it appears that 2,491 of the reported attacks were once morest older adults, which implies that, on average, seven people from this population are attacked in their homes every day. Of the number, 1,343 are women and 1,148 are men. The report indicates that 468 of the attacks on older adults occurred on Sundays. Last year in the same period analyzed, 2,204 cases of violence once morest this population group were recorded.

The violence that occurs within homes also directly affects minors, although this year there was a slight decrease. The entity reported 5,637 cases of violence once morest children and adolescents from January to November 2023, while in the same period of 2022 there were 5,700 episodes of violence reported.

Legal Medicine also reported 11,049 cases of violence between other family members, compared to the 10,920 that were registered last year. Of the cases in 2023, it is estimated that 7,045 of the victims are women and 4,004 are men.

Increase in couple cases

Another of the statistics that Forensic Medicine provided as of November of this year was that related to intimate partner violence, which left an increase in official records compared to the first 11 months of 2022.

In effect, it went from 38,501 episodes to 38,805, thus leaving a difference of 304 more cases. From the Aníbal Navarro Forensic Specialist Center it was explained that when this type of situation occurs between couples, communication tends to be more aggressive and other warning signs are left that must be taken into account for the respective complaint. Of the 38,805 reports, 33,392 have women as victims, with those between 25 and 29 years of age being the most affected with 7,306 records.

The most documented physical injuries are multiple traumas (20,198), facial traumas (3,312) and limb traumas (3,194), while May was the month with the most reported cases, leaving a total of 3,831 attacks between couples.
