Today’s politics moves at an accelerated pace. And if just ten days ago there was talk of the great potential of the “very wide field” of the center-left in Abruzzo, today, following the defeat of the crowd between the Gran Sasso and the Adriatic coast, there is a new dynamic that is being triggered. Terreno is the other region that will go to elections in just over a month, namely Basilicata. Here, in fact, the forces of what was the Third Pole are linking up with the centre-right. The government coalition once once more deploys Vito Bardi, a member of Forza Italia, the outgoing president. On the left, however, a psychodrama is taking place, the key to which is the difficult amalgam between the Democratic Party and 5 Star, which has driven Italia Viva and Action apart. Italia Viva has officially sanctioned its support for Bardi (“he has governed well or in any case is better than the alternative”, Renzi said yesterday). Action, at least as of last night, not yet. But according to the picture that has been created, an alternative choice seems difficult considering the interrupted communications between Carlo Calenda and PD leader Elly Schlein. And also considering the praise of Marcello Pittella (Azione’s Lucanian number one) to Bardi.
On the composition of this unprecedented alliance, yesterday Tajani stated: «A President of Forza Italia who has governed the Region well is able to broaden the boundaries of the centre-right coalition. This is a choice of regional politics, not national politics. The same can happen in Piedmont and, coincidentally, it always happens with the presidents of Forza Italia.” While waiting for the Lucanian picture to be put together, in fact, Piedmont is the other region, governed by the Italian Alberto Cirio, on which the telescope is placed to understand whether the centre-right will see a further convergence of the duo. Italia Viva might be in the game. Recognitions also came from Action, with figures from Forza Italia. First Osvaldo Napoli, from Piedmont. Then Mariastella Gelmini, national spokesperson, who last March 11 stated: «We support Cirio». The following day, in an interview with La Stampa, Calenda held back, saying that nothing has yet been decided, while recognizing Cirio’s profile as a “pro-European liberal”. In the same interview, Calenda also recalled the situation in Calabria, where «we support the Forzista governor Roberto Occhiuto, good and moderate». Are the plates moving for a new political order?
There may certainly be some points of compatibility between the members of the Terzo Polo and the centre-right, especially on the basic level of economic and fiscal policies (apart from the minimum wage, supported by Calenda) and on the vision of a guaranteeing justice (it is no coincidence that they are all for the separation of careers). As well as on Atlanticism. These are all arguments that have prevented a credible dialogue between Action-Italia Viva and the centre-left. And yet there is a fact that should not be overlooked. That synthesis which may be easier at a regional level, around a candidate without ideological connotations and oriented towards an administration project, is not necessarily possible at a national level. There are assumptions, in fact, that demonstrate how it is not possible to run a hundred meters based on this suggestion. First of all, the friction between Renzi and Calenda. And then Renzi’s outbursts once morest Forza Italia, which he evidently wants to attract the electorate. The Azzurri, however, have shown a solid future, and that, if anything, they are in a position to attract consensus from the third pole. And it is very difficult to create synthesis when the approach is one of competition with the potential largest partner.
