The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) on Friday recommended a transition of 16 months at most in Mali.

The Council notes, in a communiqué published on Friday, having taken note of the additional economic and financial sanctions once morest Mali and approves the Communiqué of the ECOWAS Summit held on January 12 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The PSC further expresses “its full support for all efforts aimed at creating the necessary conditions to promote the return to constitutional order in Mali, including the efforts of ECOWAS and its mediator, the former Nigerian President Goodluck Johnathan”.

Rejecting the timetable of 5 years then 4 years proposed by the Malian authorities, the Council considers that “this timetable constitutes an undue extension of the transition process in Mali” adding that it is considered “unconstitutional, inadmissible, inappropriate and constitutes a serious obstruction of the democratic process in the country”.

Calling on the Malian authorities to respect the Transition Charter and the decisions of the PSC and ECOWAS by organizing elections within a reasonable timeframe to be agreed by all stakeholders, the AU stresses “the imperative of a rapid restoration of constitutional and democratic order led by civilians”.
