The African continent could break apart

Scientists argue that a major crack might cause the African continent to break apart and even form a new ocean.

A rift more than 56 km long formed in the Ethiopian desert in 2005, reports NBC News.

This occurred due to three diverging tectonic plates, which might cause the continent to split.

These tectonic plates have been studied for several decades by scientists.

This phenomenon is unique in the world today, according to Christopher Moore, a doctoral student at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, to NBC.

The Arabian plate has been moving away from Africa for 30 million years, which would have contributed to the creation of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

However, the Somali Plate in East Africa is also moving away from the Nubian Plate.

The exact causes of this phenomenon are still unknown.

Some believe that a massive crest of overheated rock might be the source of the cleavage.
