Moscow reiterated on Monday its objection to the decision of Finland and Sweden to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), stressing that this decision was a “mistake with profound consequences” of especially since it “will change the world”.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in a press release that his country “simply will not accept Sweden and Finland joining NATO”, according to the website. from the channel “Russia Today”.
“The world will change radically following Sweden’s decision to join NATO”, he said, stressing that the membership of these two countries in NATO “would be a mistake with considerable consequences”.
On Thursday, Russia pledged to take “military-technical measures” to protect its national security if Finland and Sweden join NATO.
Moscow has repeatedly warned neighboring countries once morest joining NATO and said any move in this regard would threaten its security and constitute an illegal expansion of NATO.
It considered that Finland’s membership in NATO would constitute a violation of an agreement concluded with Russia in 1992, one of its clauses of which stipulates the obligation of each of them not to allow their territories are used to launch military aggression once morest the other country.
