“The Absence of Visual Communication Makes Each Call Agonizing for 52-Year-Old Stutterer Jean-Pascal”

Stuttering is a speech disorder that affects 1 in 100 Belgians. It can sometimes lead to a smile or cause mockery. In France, it is recognized as a handicap but not in Belgium. Our team met with Jean-Pascal, a 52-year-old who suffers from severe stuttering. He shares his daily life, his anxieties, and his hopes.

“I realized around the age of 6 or 7 that I was not intellectually the same as another,” said Jean-Pascal. “Young, you tell yourself that you are not guilty of this but it is still not funny,” he confides.

Today, what Jean-Pascal fears above all are phone calls. On that day, he must call for information on purchasing a thermostat. The call is laborious. He has the anguish of dialogue, but he manages to ask his questions and get the answers.

Each call is for him, torture: “It’s the fact of not seeing the other person. When I have a call and I don’t know the number, I don’t pick up,” he breathes.
