This Sunday, his grandmother, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (83), abdicated. His father, Frederik (55), becomes king. This brings him, Christian (18), a little closer to the throne.
Since November 2023, Christian has been able to represent his grandmother and father if both are unable to attend. He signed a declaration of commitment to comply with the constitution.
In Denmark the queens and kings are always called the same
His full name is: Christian Valdemar Henri John, Prince of Denmark and Count of Monpezat. The first name was deliberately chosen because for centuries it has been customary in Denmark for either a Christian or a Frederik or a Margrethe to sit on the throne.
Christian will graduate from high school in 2024
Like his siblings, Princess Isabella, 16, and 13-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, Christian was long kept away from most of the crown’s public duties.
Since November 2023, this has changed when he came of age: he signed a declaration of commitment to comply with the constitution should Queen Margrethe II or Frederik, who will become king on Sunday, be unable to attend. With his father’s accession to the throne, the 18-year-old will also receive a salary for his work as crown prince.
But 2024 will be the year dedicated to a big, very normal thing for 18-year-olds: Christian is doing his high school diploma. He will then concentrate on his academic and military career, likely following in his father’s footsteps and serving as a recruit in the royal bodyguard. His cousins Nikolai and Felix stopped their military training – a luxury that will not be an option for the heir to the throne.
Crown Prince Christian’s wife is said to not be Danish
Although Christian is still very young, there is already discussion about who his future wife should be. The former head of the court, Thornit Frederik, is said to have asked him not to marry a Danish woman under any circumstances. The reason: the indiscretion of her relatives. «A Danish girl has a Danish family. That doesn’t work, you have to have a strange girl. The further away, the better.”
Princess Maria Chiara of Bourbon-Two-Sicily (19) fit the bill well: it was rumored for a long time that the Italian princess was dating the royal. But she denied the rumor: She and Christian are just close friends, she wrote on Instagram.
