The state of health of the little French boy who fell into a crater 100 meters deep on one of the Galapagos islands is “stable”, the French embassy in Quito announced on Sunday.
«The little boy’s state of health is stable and he is receiving the necessary medical care.” the embassy told AFP.
The 8-year-old, who local media present as Axel Devosse, fell Friday into one of two craters at the Los Gemelos site on Santa Cruz Island, according to the Galapagos National Park.
“The rapid intervention of the rescuers trained in these emergency situations made it possible to get it out of the bottom of the crater, more than 100 meters away”, he said in his report dated Friday.
Very touristic hiking spot
Los Gemelos are formed by two craters, which face each other, caused by the collapse of magma chambers, a popular hiking spot for tourists.
“We were on the way back, to the taxi, and Axel, the tallest (of his sons) was in the back, looking at things, and at one point there was a scream. A Brazilian said he saw him fall”said the boy’s father, Jérôme Devosse, to the local press.
He added that “when they (firefighters) arrived they used ropes. It was very difficult, they mightn’t see him (the boy). There was this person, the Brazilian, who had a drone that helped the firefighters locate the child.
The child was taken to the island’s Republica del Ecuador hospital. According to its director, Boris Daza, quoted by the local press, “The patient arrived in a non-critical condition despite the situation”.
The Galapagos archipelago, which owes its name to its giant tortoises, is located 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador and has unique fauna and flora in the world. During the first quarter of this year, 78,507 tourists visited Galapagos.
