The Braunau-Simbach power plant, which was built between 1951 and 1954, is getting old and is now being modernized. The association speaks of necessary and extensive renovation measures with an investment sum of 80 million euros. The first preparatory work will begin this year.
The construction work will take several years, and the gradual replacement of the machine parts is planned from autumn to the end of 2028. “The core of the work concerns the installation of four new, state-of-the-art Kaplan turbine runners and generators,” says Rainer Tschopp from Verbund. Replacing a turbine is not an easy matter, on the contrary. The impeller alone weighs 58 tons and has a diameter of 6.3 meters.
615 million kilowatt hours
“Thanks to the improved efficiency of the turbines and a planned increase in the volume of water from 1,070 to 1,260 cubic meters per second, production can be increased by 11.8 percent following water law approval and project completion. An additional 65 million kilowatt hours per year will be generated there in the future,” says Chop. This amount corresponds to the annual electricity needs of 18,500 households. After modernization, the Braunau-Simbach power plant will generate a total of 615 million kilowatt hours and thus supply 175,000 households with hydroelectric power.
In order to create space for various transport of machine parts as well as containers for offices and sanitary facilities, trees in the vicinity of the power plant will be cleared and then reforested, the company said. The cycle path will be accessible without restrictions during the entire construction period.
