The 5-day diet that promises to rid you of belly fat

It sounds too good to be true. A 5-day diet that promises not only a leaner body, but also longevity, as with a healthy diet we improve heart function and reduce inflammation.

It has been called the “fasting mimicking diet” because it offers all the benefits of the diethowever, it also includes burning belly fat and reducing cholesterol.

According to the Telegraph, this particular 5 day diet was created by professor Walter Longo, biogerontologist and director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California.

The diet has already been shown to slow aging in animal studies, but now those benefits have been extended to humans.

Tests of 100 study participants, who followed the diet for five days and ate normal meals for the remaining 25, showed that their cells and immune systems functioned in a more youthful way. Further analysis of blood samples revealed that they had reversed their biological age by two and a half years.

Professor Longo’s research led him to discover exactly how our cells detect food – from there he created a specific low-calorie meal plan.

The 5 day diet

The five-day diet ranges from 1100 calories on day one and up to 800 calories on days two through five. We eat mostly plant-based foods that are low in sugar, low in protein, and contain a research-backed nutrient complex.

This combination puts the body into diet mode, meaning it draws on fat cells for fuel and uses old dead cells – a process known as autophagy.

How Diet Targets Belly Fat

Professor Longo says that fasting attacks abdominal fat, without affecting lean muscle (unlike most other diets, which he claims “will cause a loss of fat, water, sometimes lean muscle and bone density”). “On average the general population loses 5-6 kilograms of weight, mostly fat, after three five-day cycles of the diet,” he adds.

According to the Telegraph, this particular diet, called Pro-Lon (short for “pro-longevity”), was awarded the first patent in history for “Promoting Longevity and Healthspan” and has undergone over a decade of studies in both animals as well as humans with papers examining its effects on a range of health issues, from its effect on aging to cancer – published in numerous scientific journals.

A published study found that in addition to losing body weight—especially abdominal fat—those who followed ProLon five days a month for three months saw reductions in blood pressure and cholesterol and had an increase in stem cell production, as well as decreased levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), a hormone linked to cancer risk when it increases.

There are currently several clinical trials underway to examine how it can help cancer patients, which the professor describes as “very promising”.

The five-day diet includes smoothies, salads, zucchini, mushroom pasta, fruit and regular yoga sessions, for a holistic approach to nutrition and wellness.
