The 40th edition of the Cully Jazz Festival opens its doors

From Barbara Hendricks to Avishai Cohen, via Stephan Eicher and his project on Mani Matter, the big names proposed by the Cully Jazz Festival this year were popular and sold out. But many artists remain to be discovered. “We must not hesitate to come, even the rain does not stop us”, indicates to the RTS the co-director of the festival, Jean-Yves Cavin. Last year, the festival had indeed experienced weather “beyond cataclysmic”.

Swiss jazz and elsewhere

Among the concerts scheduled on the shores of Lake Geneva, we can mention Sona Jobarteh, kora player, Mulu Astatke, Ethiopian multi-instrumentalist, pianist André Manoukian and The Balkanes, percussionist Manu Katché and his guests. Or Lonny, Dom La Nena, Gay Su Akyol and Kid Be Kid.

The event also highlights the proliferation of Swiss jazz, from Christian Zehnder to cellist Sara Oswald and Pascal Auberson in duet with his son Césard Decker. Without forgetting an important off program of 85 free concerts.

New technology

For this 40th anniversary, the public and artists will be welcomed in a new marquee equipped with a state-of-the-art sound system. Used for the first time by a festival in Switzerland, this sound technology will allow an enhanced live experience thanks to a total immersion in the performance.

Volunteers on the go

Each year, the festival can count on 600 loyal volunteers. “We are lucky that people like each other a lot, the turnover is low. They are there for the atmosphere, to co-create the festival, in a mixture of professionalism and good humor”, underlines Jean-Yves Cavin who praises their “very high quality” work.
