The founder of mainland online shopping platform JD.com, Liu Qiangdong, was accused of sexually assaulting a Chinese female student in Minnesota four years ago. He was sued by the other party for compensation. The court was originally scheduled to start today, but the prosecution and defense issued a joint statement the night before, alleging that The two sides have reached a settlement, calling the incident a “misunderstanding” and stressing that the prosecution will not make any further comment on the incident, nor will the two sides issue any more joint statement.

Chinese female student Liu Jingyao accused Liu Qiangdong of forcibly following her home and sexually assaulting her following attending a dinner with Liu Qiangdong in Minnesota at the end of August 2018. At the end of the same year, local prosecutors believed that the evidence was insufficient and did not prosecute, but Liu Jingyao filed a civil lawsuit in April 2019, asking Liu Qiangdong and JD.com to compensate US$50,000 (regarding HK$392,000) for the incident.
