Today, friends of ours in Lisbon celebrate April 25, 1974, the forty-ninth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
This annual Portuguese demonstration takes place serenely, without police or disorder, while the crowd walks down Lisbon’s avenue with songs, catchphrases and poetry. An even more emblematic and necessary popular manifestation, at this time when the fascist beast is baring its teeth and sharpening its claws in an attacking position in the four corners of the Earth.
This monstrous thing comes, multiplying wounds of hatred and resentment, spitting out the bile of prejudice, spreading the most repulsive human feelings, in its insane determination to confront the small, the weak, the different; to run over democracy, freedom, social justice, civilizing principles; in its uncontrolled desire for authoritarian power, privileging soulless corporations, individuals without values, in a spurious use of a technological advance, the internet, once morest the grain of Humanity’s dreams and desires for harmony.
We need to be united, lucid, strong and determined, more than ever and than ever.
The survival of civilization and of the species itself depends on it.
