Today at 7 p.m., the 22nd Matsalu Nature Film Festival will be officially opened in the Lihula Culture House with the French film “Kuretance”. A total of 52 of the best nature films made in the last year from Estonia and other parts of the world will be screened at the festival this year, and the authors of the films will also introduce several of them.
The opening film “Kuredance” explores what happens when nature film meets performance art. In the film, director Maxence Lamoureux, in collaboration with choreographer and dancer Fiona Le Goff, takes viewers to meet cranes whose wedding rituals have inspired dances in cultures around the world.
Heli Tetlov, head of the festival’s film program, said that every year it is more and more difficult to select a competition program from the films presented, because there are so many strong actors. “This year, 821 films were submitted to the festival, of which choosing only 52 was certainly a challenge. At the same time, we got together a very good selection of films that show the diversity of nature in all its colors and the human relationship with everything around us,” said Tetlov.
In addition to the film program, many other events will take place in Lihula during the festival, from a memory game to a workshop on speaking stones. The special Saturday podcast program has already become a tradition, where you can participate in the public recording of three different podcasts and see how radio magic really works.
After a break of more than a year, the popular festival photo day is also back. Photo stories will be told on Saturday, September 28 in the new cafe Von Hauer in the center of Lihula. During the day, there will be six presentations by top performers in their field on topics related to nature photography, and during the festival, five different nature photography exhibitions will be open in different places across Lihula. Among others, the exhibition “Matsalu Nature” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Matsalu National Park, organized in cooperation with MAFF and the State Forest Management Center. Photo Day is coordinated this year by Remo Savisaar.
Competition films screened at MAFF compete in two categories: nature and man and nature. The winners are selected by a jury of experts, which this year includes Tuul Sepp, Urmas Tartes, Eva Kübar and Alis Mäesalu from Estonia, as well as Belgian director Jurgen Buedts and Finnish filmmaker Jouni Hiltunen.
The Matsalu Nature Film Festival (MAFF) will take place this year on September 25-29 in Lihula and until October 6 in screening locations all over Estonia.
