The Spacetop notebook is the first portable computer to use augmented reality (AR) in place of the screen. Developed by Sightful, a company focused on creating augmented reality products that are innovative, intuitive and valuable for the user’s daily life. Basically it is a notebook with a folding lid that comes with an eyepiece used to view a virtual 100-inch screen.

Through several Spacetop promotional videos, Sighful presented the advantages and proposal of its notebook that works exclusively through a virtual screen. As mentioned above, the user needs to use augmented reality glasses developed by the company to view elements that can be from a single window or several for viewing different types of content.

Sightful Spacetop: Augmented Reality Notebook Specifications

Through a partnership with Nreal, manufacturer of augmented reality glasses, Sightful makes available, together with the Spacetop 1, customized glasses for the notebook. Instead of using an Intel or AMD processor, the company chose to implement a Qualcomm chipset, the Snapdragon 865, which has an Adreno 650 GPU. In addition, the machine has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

With a weight of 1.5Kg, the Spacetop is 4cm high, 26.59cm wide and 22.3cm deep. Excited regarding the launch of the company’s first product, Sightful co-founder Tamir Berliner says:

Laptops are the centerpiece of our daily work lives, but the technology has not evolved with the modern, work from anywhere, privacy concerns, ‘road warrior’ mentality. Meanwhile, augmented reality is full of potential and promise, but has yet to find its everyday use case.

We are in the perfect time for a significant paradigm shift in a device we all know and love.

Release and availability

At the moment, the Spacetop notebook is available for purchase for the 1000 people who reserved it through a program offered by the company. It is not yet known how much the computer will cost the general public, nor whether it will actually be mass-produced. Below you can check out a promotional trailer for the product.
