Pascal Eenckhoorn (Lot Destiny) of the Netherlands was second in the section, and Jonas Aprahamsen (Unoek Pro Cycling Team) of Norway was third. Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Ducouninck), wearing the maillot veil of the point prize, finished in 4th place in the first section. Maillot Jaune was defended by Denmark’s Jonas Vingego (Jumbo Visma).

152 competitors entered the 18th stage. France’s Anthony Perez (Cofidis) and Belgium’s Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) did not start. Asgren attacked shortly following the start and was joined by Viktor Campenaerts (Lot Destiny) and Aprahamsen to form the escape group for the day.

At 30km, the three had a one-minute lead, but the team aiming for a group goal sprint controlled the group, and the time difference did not exceed two minutes. With 65km to go, Eenkhorn attacked from the pack, while Campenaerts waited for his teammate before joining the leading two with 58km to go.

The four of them arrived at the goal, Bourg Can Bresse, while maintaining a slight time difference. They were 20 seconds behind with 10km to go, and 10 seconds behind with 5km to go, but the pack never caught them. With only 4 seconds to go through Fulham Rouge with 1km to go, Campenaerts kept the lead until 400m from the breakaway group. But Eenkhorn mightn’t beat Asgrain, who started the sprint with 200m to go.

■Comment from 28-year-old Asgrain, who won the section for the first time
“Obviously our escape situation was not ideal. We wanted to escape with seven or eight men, and it was also one of the final stages of the Tour following a very demanding few weeks.

It was a team time trial all day long. Fellow Fellowship was absolutely wonderful. Considering how much we worked on the escape, we all deserved the win. I’m glad I escaped.

I dedicate this victory to all the people who helped me in my hard times. And also teammate Dries Devenins, his wife and kids. He’s in his last season and running his last Tour.”
