Done! We have completed the Ayurvedic 10-day detoxification treatment. The reward was fresh, home-baked bread and crispy rolls on the first day. I really missed those the most. But I felt lighter and fresher without bread during the treatment because I only ate vegetable soup in the evening.
Lent = detoxification
When I was a child in Catholic Bavaria, Advent was Lent. I collected all the sweets in a box and only from Christmas onwards were there cookies and sweets. Maybe you think this is old-fashioned? Not at all! Ayurveda recommends exactly that. I wouldn’t have believed that the Catholic tradition had figured out Ayurveda either. But since the Catholic Church has adopted many things from the so-called pagans, Lent is also part of the church’s rituals.
November and December are often cold and wet
According to Ayurveda, the winter period from November to February is the Vata season. The nature of Vata is cold, harsh and windy.
The Kapha season begins in mid/late February. Do you remember the essence of Kapha? It’s cold, wet, heavy, tough, sticky. Just like a cold. In winter, the body accumulates kapha particularly easily. You can tell from the scales, but also from the fact that a noticeable number of people have colds in winter. Because a cold is usually the result of too much Kapha in the body. Colds are slimy things and that’s exactly what Kapha’s typology is: tough and sticky. In order to get rid of all this sticky stuff, Ayurveda recommends doing a regular detoxification treatment.
First winter without a cold
A few years ago I did the 10-day detox treatment in December because I had one goal: I wanted to experience the first winter without a cold! For many, many years, I have always had a bad cold or flu during the Kapha period, i.e. from February onwards. I didn’t feel like doing that anymore.
I did an experiment, namely the 10-day detox treatment. My goal was:
- Exit Ama
- As little sweet as possible.
10 day purification treatment = detox
Purging Ama acts like a detoxification treatment. But you should definitely feel healthy and stable. In an illness situation, detoxification is absolute not to recommend!
By the way, you can also do the treatment just as well in the spring. Because from Ash Wednesday to Easter it is Lent once more! This is simply perfectly set up, because at this time of year it’s worth rinsing out everything that has already accumulated. And then you start spring light and fresh like a colorful butterfly.
This is how the detoxification treatment works
Half an hour before breakfast, drink the popular lemon honey water. Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 1 to 2 teaspoons of very good organic honey with a glass of lukewarm water. The water must not be warmer than 40 °C! When honey is heated, it becomes toxic. Can honey become poisonous?
If you’re a Kapha type, you may not need breakfast. Vata and Pitta types drink a glass of freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juice. Honestly, I also often used high-quality organic straight juice. But that stays between us, right.
Porridge for breakfast is also very suitable. It calms your Vata, because Vata gets out of balance during fasting or detoxification periods. A warm, nourishing breakfast is the ideal start to your detox day. Porridge for breakfast.
Almost anything is allowed at lunchtime
For lunch you can eat anything that is easy to digest and freshly cooked. Lots of vegetables with as little to no fat as possible. Dahl (lentil dishes) provides filling protein and is easy to digest. Eat your fill, but pay attention to the fine satiety point. Your stomach should only be three-quarters full.
Vegetable soup in the evening
Freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juice once more in the evening. If, like me, that’s not enough for you and you start trotting up and down like a tiger, you can cook yourself a delicious vegetable soup. It should be light, contain no potatoes and can contain some rice to fill you up. Eat before 6 p.m. if possible.
If you feel hungry every now and then, don’t snack! Really, no candy, no cookies. But you can still have a glass of fruit juice. If possible, drink it at room temperature or add a little hot water. Your stomach and digestion will thank you.
4 things you should never do
To keep the cleaning effect as great as possible, there are four things you should avoid doing:
- Drink coffee or tea
- Eating sugar (sweets of all kinds)
- Eat fat (ghee in very small amounts is okay)
- Snack in between
Every calorie you eat between meals throws off the cleansing program. It helps me especially when I drink hot water.
Super trick – hot water!
And now the super trick: Drink boiled hot water for 10 minutes every half hour throughout the day. As hot as possible, but in a way that makes you comfortable. This is the Ayurvedic super trick for rinsing out Ama. I always boil a whole kettle full of 1.5 liters of water. My kettle simmers at 95 °C for regarding 30 minutes, then I fill the hot water into warming jugs. But you can also boil the water in the pot and then pour it into the warming jug.

Drink nothing before or following eating
Please do not drink anything for half an hour before eating and one and a half hours following eating. The water would dilute the digestive juices and the success of the treatment would be reduced. If you’re going to cure it, then do it right, right?
What else is important? Fresh air and exercise! You should definitely do this every day. Twenty or thirty minutes of exercise in the fresh air boosts your metabolism and helps your body eliminate ama.
A lot of sleep helps a lot
Oh yes, and one more thing: get enough sleep! Anyone who sleeps doesn’t eat. That helped me. Take the wonderful angel train before 10 p.m. and get a good night’s sleep. To the blog post Heavenly Sleep. Sleep according to your type: Vata types are allowed to sleep a lot, even at midday. Pitta types feel most comfortable with around seven to eight hours and Kapha types always have to keep themselves on their toes and should get up before six o’clock and not sleep longer than eight hours.
My cure success
As a Pitta type, I always have the next meal in mind and it’s hard for me to skip a meal. Then I become a wild tiger. But I’ve now learned that a glass of hot water helps me get over the urge to snack. And it was worth it!
The pain in my knees has become significantly less. I can suddenly move my shoulder much, much better once more, which I have been working on with physical therapy for months.
Ama always targets the weak points in the body. And now I’ve excreted a lot of it. It feels super heroic not to snack on sweets. With small, small exceptions, I don’t want to eat any candy until Christmas. Let’s see where the cold will go?

5 days are enough too
If ten days are too much for you, then just do the treatment for five days or even just three days. A very good method to stay fit over the long term is this: Take a detox day like this every week. This is easy to install and maintains pretty well.
