That’s why North Jutland writes about “self-congratulatory women’s whining”

In a diary format, we get an insight into 35-year-old Mie Myhren’s emotional life as divorced with a sharing arrangement, and in another article the new mother, 32-year-old Nana K. Friis-Jakobsen, tells about feeling attacked too voluntarily and in agreement with her girlfriend to have chosen to take a short maternity leave.

However, a reader’s letter from the other day has made me go a slightly different way. A reader named Mette Præstegaard has noticed that journalism in North Jutland has changed.

And she is not happy.

A strange size, reminiscent of a clone of Billed-Bladet and a women’s magazine with giant pictures and women’s magazine articles about today’s whining and self-congratulatory women, calls our disgruntled reader Nordjuyske. Ouch.

She points the finger in the direction of the new management, and since I am the only new member of the editorial management for the last year – and at the same time responsible for the content in Nordjutsy – I think that the critical input is addressed to me.

Mette Præstegaard misses news material – and thinks she speaks on behalf of many. I can assure our readers that news from all over North Jutland continues to be an essential part of our journalism every single day. At the same time, it is correct that we have chosen to supplement our product with other formats – e.g. by covering some of the topics that concern our readers but are not necessarily classic news or relate to a postcode or event.

In November last year, we established the editorial board Nordjydernes liv, which writes about divorces and maternity, as in Mies and Nana’s case, but also about love, relationships, upbringing, mental health and many other topics.

We have done this because we want to describe what is relevant to our readers and which interests them the most.

For me, it is relevant that we exist for North Jutland and must take the people of North Jutland seriously.

It is relevant that we are first with the most important news for the people of North Jutland.

And it is relevant that we take up the subjects that concern the people of North Jutland – and cover them seriously and properly.

And this also applies to the subjects that I have described above. It is content that I am proud of, and it is content that is well received by many readers, which we can see from the readership figures at Nordjyske.dk.

I am always happy for feedback on Nordjuyske’s journalism, and I am always ready to discuss Nordjyske’s new content strategy, but I am, on the other hand, a bit saddened by Mette Præstegaard’s condescending way of describing journalism and the brave women who stand out as “whining” women.

Instead of settling on new formats with sources that Mette Præstegaard may not be able to identify with, I hope that she will continue to read along and learn more about “today’s self-celebrating women”. And at the same time, she can continue to read the many news and classic formats that continue to make up the majority of our journalism.

And let me end where I began with praise for Nana and Mie – and all other North Jutland people who dare to stand up in North Jutland. With their honesty and openness, they contribute to us understanding ourselves and each other better.
