United forces for a sunny future

With the expansion of the production area in Sattledt, production capacities at Fronius were significantly increased. At Fronius, October 5th was all about sustainable, future-proof value creation. As part of the “Production Power Summit 2023”, the company presented its vision to set the course towards 24 hours of sun together with the European solar industry. Elisabeth Engelbrechtsmüller-Strauß, CEO Fronius International GmbH

Solar energy is playing an increasingly larger role in the expansion of renewable energy supplies globally. “As the heart and brain of PV systems, inverters are supporting elements of the power grids of the future and therefore critical infrastructure. As a European manufacturer, we see this as a great responsibility, which we consciously assume with forward-looking strategies and technological innovations. We are therefore particularly pleased to discuss the possibilities for strengthening the European PV industry together with suppliers, sales partners and installers. In line with our internationalization strategy, we are also looking beyond borders in order to create a solid foundation for sustainable growth,” said Elisabeth Engelbrechtsmüller Strauß, CEO Fronius International, opening the event.

“The situation on the European solar market is tense for many companies. We feel this too, especially since we have had to deal with challenges ourselves in recent years,” explained Martin Hackl, Global Director Marketing and Sales, Business Unit Solar Energy, Fronius International GmbH, and continues: “This makes it all the more important to take targeted actions together to set measures that strengthen our structures. With this in mind, we have placed our production on a broad basis in order to massively increase the availability of European inverters. But this is only a first step, because only with strong self-confidence from the entire industry will we be able to supply the European market with products from local companies.”

Production power on track

At the Production Power Summit 2023, Fronius presented approaches to managing resilient supply chains as well as measures already taken to increase output performance – such as expanding production in Sattledt near Wels. According to the company’s own information, the production area has almost doubled, meaning that production capacity has increased significantly in the last two years. Tripling the storage capacity should further increase the availability of the products. In addition, an innovative logistics system supplies the doubled number of solar production lines with pre-picked component packages. Final tests and a long-term stress test are carried out automatically in the modernized test center. Devices that have been successfully tested are transported to the shipping area. A new high-bay warehouse will provide support here. Storage and retrieval is also fully automatic. As soon as orders for national and international shipping are completed, the products go to the outgoing goods department, where capacities have also been doubled.

Look beyond the continent

Fronius has long since grown into a global player. The Solar Energy business unit is active in the PV market in 26 of these branches. “Internationalization has enabled our strong growth in the past and will continue to strengthen us as a European manufacturer in the future,” explains Engelbrechtsmüller Strauß and says: “We observe and know our markets very well and strengthen our position where we see growing opportunities . We have been represented in the USA at our location in Portage, Indiana since 2002. We are currently building a new research and development department there in order to be closer to the needs of the market. Products and features are further developed according to local requirements, making the local development department a pioneer in the production of tailor-made solutions. The next step is to establish our own inverter production lines in Portage. By building a local network of suppliers, we are creating a sustainable value chain to optimally supply the American and Asia-Pacific markets. By implementing this ‘local for local’ approach, we increase the global resilience and healthy growth of our company.”
