That early morning, Steen and his mother looked death in the eye

They could both have ended up there – and in a far worse condition.

Because the best way they drove there on Aggersundvej between Fjerritslev and Aggersund in Steen’s little Smart car with room for just two passengers, it was at 6.15 suddenly need to rub the sleep out of my eyes.

Towards them came an Opel with a 35-year-old driver behind the wheel, who had his eyes fixed more on his phone than the road in front of him.

– He pulled further and further into our lane, says Steen Hansen.

For a split second, he and his mother looked death in the eye, but miraculously avoided a direct collision.

Quite startlingly, the entire process was immortalized on video, because ever since 32-year-old Steen Hansen, as a brand new driver at the age of 18, was involved in a similar accident, where the entire side of his very first car was peeled off in a collision, he has drove with a dash cam in his cars.

After the near-death experience, his mother could tell by looking in the rear-view mirror that a van driving behind them was not so lucky.

– She could see that the Opel continued as if he hadn’t seen anything. By the time he had passed me, he was completely over in our lane, so the guy in the van simply drove his car straight into the ditch to avoid it. I didn’t see all that, because I was busy saving my own car, says Steen Hansen.

When the initial shock had worn off, he turned the car around and looked first at the driver of the van. While the van was dented from the trip in the ditch, the driver escaped unscathed, but with a huge shock.

Next, Steen Hansen could see that the driver of the Opel had pulled into a rest area 200 meters away.

– Then I drove there – mostly to see if he was okay. Because I could see he was holding the brake down. And he was somewhat shocked. He admitted so bluntly that he had sat and looked at his phone, says Steen Hansen.

Subsequently, he asked the driver of the Opel to accompany him to the van so that insurance information could be exchanged.

Today – 12 days later – Steen Hansen states that the violent traffic experience has not left a deep mark on him.

– Happened happened, as he says.
