The head of the military intelligence directorate of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), General Aharon Haliva, has resigned over the “failures” that led to the attack on Israel by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas last 7 October. «The intelligence division was not up to the task entrusted to us. During my duties, I knew that with authority comes heavy responsibility”, reads the resignation letter published by the Israeli newspaper “Haaretz”. Haliva called for the establishment of a state investigative committee, «which can fully, thoroughly and precisely investigate and discover all the factors and circumstances that led to the difficult events» of October 7, 2023. According to the Israeli newspaper «Times of Isreel”, Haliva is currently involved “in the IDF’s internal investigations into its failures in the period preceding the Hamas massacre”. The investigations are expected to be presented to the IDF chief of staff, General Herzi Halevi, by the beginning of June.
