Two days after the 0:6 rejection in Vienna, Austria’s national ice hockey team rehabilitated itself in the second friendly against the Czech Republic. The ÖEHV selection only had to admit defeat to the six-time world champion on Saturday in Brno by 1:2 (1:0.0:1.0:1). The outstanding player in red-white-red was goalkeeper David Kickert, who kept the defeat within limits with a number of great saves.
The Czechs put the Austrians under a lot of pressure right from the start and also had the best chances to score, but Kickert squandered chance after chance. With the first offensive action, the ÖEHV selection struck on the counterattack. After preliminary work from Lukas Haudum and a pass from Henrik Neubauer, striker of the Zeller Eisbären from the second-class Alps Hockey League, Steven Strong turned the game upside down (8th).
After just 13 minutes, a problem with the ice called for the first break, and the Czechs equalized in the 27-minute period. Philipp Chlapik scored the well-deserved equalizer on the power play (28′). But for the time being, the clearly dominant hosts could not defeat Kickert a second time, despite top-class scoring opportunities.
Only in the final third did the Czechs secure their sixth win in the sixth World Cup preparation game. David Tomasek pushed the puck into the goal to make it 2-1 (52nd).
The Austrian team meets again on Tuesday for the fifth and final training camp for the World Cup in Tampere, which begins on May 12th. In Kapfenberg, the remaining players from Masters Salzburg and perhaps also North American legionnaire Marco Rossi will also be there. On Thursday (6.30 p.m.) in Kapfenberg and on Sunday in Trencin (4 p.m./both live ORF Sport+) the final test matches against Slovakia are on the program.
