The Chinese firm Transsion has just made a spectacular arrival among the top smartphone sellers worldwide. Establishing itself successfully on high-potential markets such as Africa and other developing regions, Transsion is showing remarkable resilience in a currently declining smartphone market. Recent data from the analysis firm Canalys for the second quarter of 2023 show that Transsion has managed to rise to fifth place in the ranking of the largest smartphone sellers in the world.

Transsion Holdings has a particularly strong presence in Africa. Its brands Tecno, Itel and Infinix all have a significant impact on this continent. Their products are designed to meet the specific needs of African consumers, with features such as long battery life, affordable pricing, and LAN-friendly features.

This consumer-oriented approach has allowed Transsion to effectively establish itself in the African smartphone market, even surpassing major competitors like Samsung et Apple in numerous countries. This is particularly impressive as industry giants like Samsung, Apple et Xiaomi experienced declines in market share of 14%, 13% and 16% respectively. Transsion, with 9% market share, registers an increase of 22% compared to the previous year and ranks 5th behind Samsung (), Apple (), Xiaomi () and Oppo ().

The previous Huawei

This scenario echoes Huawei’s spectacular rise a few years ago, with a large share in Africa before US sanctions hampered its expansion and led to a precipitous downfall. At the time, Huawei had also taken advantage of emerging markets, particularly Africa, to increase its market share and compete with industry leaders. However, Transsion’s current situation looks more favorable as the company does not face the same geopolitical challenges as Huawei.

The Canalys report also highlights that the global smartphone market is currently in decline. Global smartphone shipments were down 10% compared to the same period in 2022. But, despite this overall downward trend, Transsion stands out as an exception with notable growth, once once more proving its robustness in a market fluctuating.

However, it remains to be seen whether Transsion can maintain its upward trajectory once morest the backdrop of an ever-changing smartphone industry. With giants like Samsung already planning to buck the trend with new product launches, the challenge is daunting. Either way, Transsion’s entry into the top 5 marks a significant turning point in the smartphone industry, demonstrating the ability of new players to disrupt the status quo.
