Online article – series review » Available since the end of January on Amazon Prime, Merci Internet is a vibrant tribute to Squeezie’s career and her impact on content creation. Directed by Théodore Bonnet, this documentary retraces the key moments of the YouTuber with 18 million subscribers, present for more than a decade on the web. In five 45-minute episodes, the series highlights the genesis and evolution of the 28-year-old videographer, who has become an icon of the French-speaking Internet over the years.
The trailer for the series:
Merci Internet is a successful documentary, which stands out for its captivating narration and effective editing, alternating between funny and moving moments. The varied testimonies of the speakers – a cocktail of parents, YouTuber friends and personalities – help to highlight the evolution of mentalities with regard to Internet culture and video games. Through Squeezie’s journey, the documentary sheds light on the transformation of the media landscape, marked on one side by the rise of YouTube and on the other, by the initial resistance of more traditional media. It also highlights the intergenerational gap between parents of old, quick to demonize the Internet, and young people, whose perspective is different.
The human behind the YouTuber
Beyond revealing behind the scenes of the profession of YouTuber and its evolution, the documentary also offers a look at the moments of doubt and failures encountered by Squeezie, thus making him more human. Because before being the number 1 videographer in France, Squeezie is first and foremost Lucas Hauchard, whose first love is gaming. We thus learn that Lucas Hauchard lived an atypical adolescence, devoid of real vacations and real friendships, with the exception of that of his big brother. The documentary gives an insight into the sacrifices he had to make to reach his current status, while exposing the sometimes unhealthy aspects of the work environment that accompany this number 1 position.
The emotion at the rendezvous
Beyond entertainment, Merci Internet dives movingly into Squeezie’s personal life, revealing her complex relationships with her parents as well as her moments of gratitude towards her community. The series is also inspiring: the creativity of Squeezie and his team, their constant search for new concepts and their desire to innovate are admired. Watching him go from his bedroom to his own studio, evolving from amateur videos to big productions, fills us with both pride and nostalgia. Despite a slight imbalance in the last episode, more focused on e-sport than on Squeezie itself, the documentary remains a beautiful tribute to an emblematic figure of the Internet, which is worth watching.
