A passenger who did not pay 380,000 won following taking a round-trip taxi from Seoul to Daejeon was handed over to the police.
On the 27th, Channel A reported that the police had applied for an arrest warrant for a man in his 50s, who is accused of refusing to pay taxi fare.
According to the report, Mr. A took a taxi from Dangsan-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul around 4 am on the 25th and asked the driver to make a round trip to Daejeon. Accordingly, the taxi driver informed Mr. A of the expected fare before departure and departed for Daejeon.
The taxi driver, who drove 345 km round-trip for 10 hours, including an hour waiting time, even bought food at a rest stop to thank long-distance customers.
When I returned to Seoul, the toll on the meter was 388,400 won including the highway toll. But when it came time to get off, Mr. A’s attitude changed. He refused to pay the bill on the meter saying, “I’ll give it to you later.”
The taxi driver eventually handed over A to the police. Free riding is usually punished as a misdemeanor, but as a result of the investigation, the police determined that A was intentional, and applied for an arrest warrant for fraud.
As such, recently, accusations regarding taxi fare scams and finding the culprit have been continuing online.
Previously, in November of last year, two passengers were robbed of taxi fares, causing outrage.
At that time, two passengers took a taxi from Suwon to Ilsan Baekma Station and fled without paying 73,500 won.
On the other hand, if you run away without paying the taxi fare, you can be punished for free-riding or fraud under the Criminal Act. A fine of not more than 100,000 won is imposed if a person is punished for free-riding. Depending on the nature of the crime, punishment for fraud is also possible, in which case the punishment is up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won.
