It did take a little longer. A little more than ten years have passed since the release of THALIJA’s last album (“III”). But now the band collective, which now numbers seventeen members, is back on the stage of the local music scene with new material in the form of the new record released on Pumpkin Records – which is consequently titled “IV”.
Thalia are considered pioneers when it comes to post-rock in this country, as the group was really one of the first to practice the atmospherically charged, multi-layered and broad rock sound with connections to other genres, such as electronic, and a strong penchant for experimentation in a truly impressive way . If you listen to “IV”, the new album by Thalijayou can be pleased to see that not much has changed.
Their band collective continues to cultivate a sound that follows its own rules and is expressed more in an open form than in a clear and closed song structure. The numbers tell broad arcs of tension that slowly and steadily become charged with more and more mood through layered repetition and improvisational interjections, gaining in density and finally merging into noisy walls of guitar sound. This happens in a very diverse way, between quieter and dreamy moments, mysterious moods and powerful passages that almost take on epic dimensions. The nice thing regarding the whole thing is that there is no repetition. Rather, the numbers really all develop their own character, which means that they always move in an unpredictable direction.
In summary, one can say that with “IV” Thalija, as in the past, offers a slightly different kind of sound experience, one that invites you to close your eyes for a moment and surrender to your own film in your head. As a listener, you are invited to immerse yourself deeply in what is happening and let yourself be carried away in the most beautiful way. An extremely successful comeback.
