Thales launches accelerator to help medical imaging startups industrialize

Other contributors to the accelerator include Fortil Group, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), UGA School of Engineering and Management and Grenoble University Hospital. The creation of the platform also highlights the active role of social partners, especially CGT. Their presence on departmental strategy committees is often less visible when such structures are created. Trixell (one of the platform’s partners) has an active CGT elected official, which helps CGT take a positive position in the emergence of Axel.

Provide production materials

“France has many new startups in medical imaging, but scaling up is complicated”” pointed out Charles-Antoine Goffin, Thales Vice President responsible for medical imaging business. Is there a problem? The road to certification and industrialization is long and arduous. Axel aims to help startups overcome these difficulties. Even Charles-Antoine Goffin added a third challenge for these young sprouts: “Have sufficient business strength.”

The Trixell facility, a subsidiary of Thales, Philips Healthcare and Siemens Healthcare, has manufacturing resources from upstream processes (e.g. ovens, vacuum units, deposition units) to downstream processes including assembly and testing to validate image rendering . In addition to machines and people, certain startups will be able to benefit from Trixell’s procurement pipeline. A boon to stable prices or fast delivery.

Finally, the accelerator will promote collaboration between companies, start-ups, research institutions, health institutions and other local communities. At this level, the Grenoble region has the Commission for Atomic Energy (CEA) and leading hospital institutions that can help young companies.

The emergence of ecosystems

Thales’s financial position is as high as “Hundreds of thousands of euros invested in the project over three years”Charles-Antoine Goffin, along with other industrialists and public actors, added without revealing details. Goal: Attract other participants and secure funding. “Axel’s goal is to serve and continue to grow”he concluded.

For Thales, the purpose of this accelerator is not to generate revenue but to create an ecosystem and strengthen collaboration. Why not sign a partnership with a promising startup? “France has a card to play in this area, where startups are acquired by companies, usually U.S. companies,” Charles Antoine Goffin Respiratory Tract. Of the 60 startups identified by the Industrial Strategy Committee, the partners have identified 10 startups.

Medical imaging, a growing industry

The global medical imaging industry is worth $40 billion, according to one report Global Market Insights. Thales hopes to establish a lasting presence in this market through its subsidiary Trixell, which prides itself on being one of France’s major players in medical imaging with an annual turnover of €200 million. The entity, which is specifically focused on digital X-ray detectors for X-ray equipment, accounts for more than 32% of the medical imaging market, which is expected to reach $22.6 billion by 2032.

This market is extremely competitive due to potential sovereignty issues. “As X-ray detector prices drop regularly, Asian manufacturers, especially Chinese ones, force Trixell to reduce production costs every year””, affirms Charles-Antoine Goffin. A difficult spiral to follow. But an innovative technology developed by a start-up company may lead to disruption.
