Thalaivi is a smash hit at the box office; Zee Studios demanding 6 crore re-fund, legal battle now

Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivi is a biopic on Jayalalitha’s life. Kangana’s portrayal of Jayalalitha received a lot of appreciation from the audience but the film failed to do well at the box office. Now there are reports that Zee Studios, which distributed the film, is asking for re-fund.

The movie premiered on the big screens during the Covid-19 lockdown. The makers immediately decided to convert the film to digital. Within two weeks of its release, the film became available on Netflix, leading to multiplexes boycotting the film. The Tamil and Telugu versions grossed around 5.75 crores.

According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Sea Studios, the worldwide distributor of Kangana Ranaut-starrer Thalaivi, has sought a refund and has subsequently approached IMPPA (Indian Motion Picture Producers Association) to file a complaint. After flopping miserably at the box office, she had demanded a refund of Rs 6 crore from the producer, Vibri Motion Pictures, as she had suffered a loss on the advance amount.

SeaStudio had sent letters to Sea Vibri Motion Pictures in this regard and apparently, they did not receive any reply, following which they decided to complain to IMPPA. Zee Studios is also trying to go to court to get their money back.
