Thailand’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been released from custody, according to his lawyer. “He left the police hospital,” said Thaksin’s lawyer Winyat Chartmontri following the tycoon was seen in a vehicle early Sunday (local time). He was released on probation.
Thailand’s former head of government has been in custody since August. He had previously lived in exile for 15 years to avoid prison because of a conflict of interest during his time in office. The eight-year prison sentence imposed on Thaksin was reduced to one year by Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn in September 2023, one day following the 74-year-old requested clemency. As head of government, Thaksin had done good things for the country and the people and was loyal to the monarchy, the royal official gazette said at the time.
