Thailand GP Qualifying 2: Marco Bezzecchi Tops the Charts, Ducati’s Success Streak Continues

2023-10-28 05:21:10

In qualifying 2 at the Thailand GP, Marco Bezzecchi secured the first best time on his first flying lap with 1:30.114 minutes ahead of Brad Binder and Fabio Quartararo. For Ducati it was regarding maintaining the successful streak of pole positions, because since the Jerez GP 2023 there has always been a Desmosedici on the best starting position. At the Spanish GP, Aleix Espargaró secured the best grid position.

Marco Bezzecchi then improved to 1:29.491 minutes, Brad Binder (Red Bull-KTM) was second, 0.208 seconds behind. Afterwards, Jorge Martin raced to first place with a time of 1:29.491 min, although he was even held up a little by Aleix Espargaró in the finish curve.

Alex and Marc Márquez skipped the first run following the detour via Q1.

In the meantime it turned out: Repsol-Honda had specially sent a man to the pit wall at Gresini Ducati and Red Bull KTM to watch when the stars would start there in Q1. He then radioed the information to the Repsol crew.

How low has this glorious team fallen? Of course, such maneuvers are not forbidden. But some observers felt that starting number 93 took him back to his actions in Sepang 2015 and Las Termas 2018 (four penalties in 40 minutes).

90 seconds before the finish, Mooney VR46 Ducati rider Marco Bezzecchi was still in the lead with 1:29.483 minutes ahead of Jorge Martin (+0.008 seconds). 3. Binders. 4. Bagnaia. 5. Alex Márquez ahead of Aleix Espargaró.

Pecco Bagnaia had to take a detour on the last lap because Aleix Espargaró rode out into the gravel.

Pramac Ducati ace Jorge Martin will fight for his fifth sprint win in a row today, having secured his fourth pole position in the last six Grands Prix at the finish. Marco Bezzecchi failed to repeat his 2022 Buriram pole.

And Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) secured a place on the front row of the grid for the fourth time this year.

«I didn’t expect this time, it was a surprise. And I’m confident regarding the sprint and tomorrow because we’re fast even with used tires,” noted Jorge Martin, who is now 27 points behind leader Pecco Bagnaia in the World Championship.

Don’t miss: The 13-lap sprint race starts today at 10 a.m. CEST.

The start is set for 3 p.m. local time. Rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast for 4 p.m.
