PLT. Deputy for Climatology at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dodo Gunawan, said that the extreme heat wave that hit Thailand is unlikely to occur in Indonesia.

“The possibility of the heatwave phenomenon occurring is very small. Heatwaves occur in mainland countries (continents) such as Thailand, while Indonesia is an archipelagic country and is located in a low latitude (tropical) region,” explained Dodo when contacted, Wednesday (1/5).

As many as 77 provinces in Thailand experienced an increase in extreme heat temperatures, 26 of which even reached temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature occurred in Lampang Province, where temperatures reached 44.2 degrees Celsius.

This increase in temperature can also occur in neighboring countries, namely the Philippines, because it is at a higher latitude than Indonesia. So even though the country is an archipelago, extreme hot weather is possible.

“Meanwhile, even though the Philippines is an archipelagic country, it is at a higher latitude than Indonesia, so heat waves are possible,” he said.

Hot weather also occurred in India, which reached a record high of 41 degrees Celsius or an increase of 5.5 degrees Celsius above normal temperature.

In Jakarta the average temperature is still 34-36 degrees Celsius or considered scorching hot, not a heat wave.
