Thai students from Saowabha Vocational College and saraburi Vocational College have made their country proud by clinching top honors at the 17th International Collegiate Snow Sculpture Contest in Harbin, China. The event, organized by Harbin Engineering University, took place from January 4 to 7 as part of the renowned Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival.
This year’s competition saw participation from 55 teams representing eight countries, including Thailand, China, Italy, Germany, Russia, Malaysia, Portugal, and Belarus. The Office of the vocational Education commission (Ovec) sent three teams from Thailand, all of which delivered exceptional performances.
The team from Saowabha Vocational College’s Fine Art Department claimed first place with their masterpiece, “Bond of the Twin Guardians.” This intricate snow sculpture drew inspiration from the deep-rooted diplomatic relationship between Thailand and China. It featured mythical creatures from both cultures, symbolizing protection, unity, and a harmonious bond that has stood the test of time.
Sharing the top spot was Saraburi Vocational College’s Fine Art Department team, whose sculpture, “Thai Fight,” celebrated the strength and artistry of Muay Thai boxing. The piece also incorporated elephants, a revered symbol of Thai culture, adding a layer of national pride to their work.
Simultaneously occurring, Surat Thani Vocational College’s Fine Art Department team secured second place with their sculpture, “Thai-Chinese Relationship.” This piece beautifully depicted the ancient migration of Chinese nationals to Thailand, using the vibrant and dynamic lion dance as its central theme.
Yodsaphon Wenukoset, Secretary-General of Ovec, expressed his pride in the students’ achievements. “The competition served as a platform for vocational students to display their abilities while earning this achievement for the country,” he said. All three teams are set to return to Thailand on Thursday, bringing their accolades and newfound inspiration back home.
This remarkable achievement not only highlights the artistic talent of Thai students but also underscores the importance of vocational education in fostering creativity and international collaboration. As these young artists return home, their success serves as a testament to the power of art in bridging cultures and celebrating shared heritage.
