I just hope the audience sees me as a normal person
Why did you choose “The Little Universe: The Price of Happiness” and not the other projects you sent invitations to?
– Actor THAI HOA: It is not difficult to see that Thai Hoa often plays a role that is somewhat miserable, full of thoughts or extremely humorous. But in this project, I get to live with a different character, a different image than before.
This aroused a certain interest in the film. However, what I found most interesting was director Tran Ngoc Lam. Even though this is my first project, I clearly feel his sophistication and kindness on set as well as filming sets. With all that, I can confirm my choice was correct.
That means it will be a very different Thai Hoa from the image of Thai Hoa that has been loved by the audience so far?
– Are not. I don’t dare confirm anything related to myself. Whether it’s different or whether it’s good or not depends on the audience’s feelings and that’s the most important thing. I can only say that I am someone who, when deciding to transform into a certain character, will live with that character as if it were my life.
Besides time on set, I spend the rest of my time with my two children and taking my wife to the gym.
Because in the end, what I aim for is not how outstanding I am or how good my role is, but whether the character I portray matches the image molded by the crew, the role. Is it closely linked to the character arc and content of the film? With my responsibility, I will have to try to fulfill it and do it well. As for the movie, we still have to wait for the audience to rate and comment.
The audience gave him the word “Box Office King” with the recognition of experts. What does that mean to you?
– I feel scared and pressured. Every kind word and compliment puts me in a state of uncertainty. I’m naturally worried, so when people compliment me like that, I feel even more worried.

Then did I do well? How to fully and subtly embody this character? Then everyone keeps praising me and putting expectations on me, can I handle that?… So many questions keep jumping in my head, causing me to get distracted when I get to the main thing. So, if I talk regarding a wish, I just hope the audience sees me as a normal person. The audience is the one who gives me an opportunity to transform into a certain character and it is the audience who will contemplate, accompany the character and give valid comments.
I have a fear of crowds
Why did he not appear at the 2023 Golden Kite Awards ceremony despite winning the award and also refusing invitations from the media to share?
– Because I’m shy or to be precise, I have a fear of crowds. At the same time, I suffered from “manic-depression” and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), so I was even more afraid of appearing in crowded places. Many brothers and sisters also ask “why am I so quiet and reserved?”. I often get talked into rambling, long-winded conversations that “slip” compared to what I want to share. I’ve been in this situation many times so I learned from experience, it’s better not to say anything. I appreciate the opportunities and awards very much, but every time I go to a crowded place, I feel unstable. Therefore, my solution is to stay home to avoid instability for myself and others.
It’s a bit unfortunate because with your name, you can easily find opportunities for other jobs like business?
– Actually, I feel like I’m rich so I don’t think regarding other jobs. I also know that I’m only good at the job I’m doing, so stop dreaming regarding other things. I don’t have much money but enough to take care of my family. To me, that’s rich. How much money is enough? Just seeing enough is enough.
After many years, is your love and passion for the profession still intact?
– Through the incident, even at “death’s door”, I realized that my life only had family and art as my reason to live. So if you don’t love and be passionate regarding those things, then what is it? There was a period when I hated everything, this life, the people around me and even my job – something I considered my life. I also don’t know what the cause is. Maybe a midlife crisis.
And one day, I had a traffic accident, close to “death’s door”. Later, I heard people tell me that, in a coma, I chatted regarding my last moments with my wife, children and movies. I realized as soon as I had to say goodbye to everyone that all I cared regarding was family and movies.
Now, my life has become simpler and more peaceful. Perhaps I know how to adjust my living time more scientifically. I don’t stay up at night anymore.
Why are you famous for “not watching” the movies you star in?
– I know it’s a bad habit and I have to fix it urgently. When the movie ended, I let go of my character and didn’t watch it once more. But I understand that I have to watch it once more so that next time, maybe there will be a way to handle the situation or create a more subtle performance.
Do you have anything in mind for the new year?
– I wrote a lot of scripts, but they were all in the early stages and then thrown away. Recently, I have found a way for myself when making films. So this year, I also want to make my own film.
What do you think when everyone in your family rushes into filmmaking and everyone can become an actor?
– If someone like me can be an actor, anyone can be an actor. As an actor, whoever invites you to act. What’s not working is that everyone is rushing to make films, but not everyone makes films for the purpose of creating a true artistic product, but also for many other things. There are people who go into film because they want to make films, but there are also people who make films because they just have money. That fact also creates unsightly chaos in the eyes of the audience.
Are you upset regarding that?
– I only know that if I do something well, I have to promote it. I just hope that the ultimate goal of each person is still to contribute their best to making Vietnamese film more beautiful and professional.
I’m afraid that people will praise me too much, and then when the bad movie doesn’t live up to expectations, the audience will be disappointed. I try my best for the role I have accepted and also hope the audience loves the character I portray, not me.
