Bérangère Couillard, Secretary of State for Ecological Transition, announced on Tuesday the establishment of a bonus to bring regarding a “circular economy” in the textile industry.
The aid will be put in place as soon as 500 dressmakers and shoemakers are labeled with Refashion, state partner eco-organisation. The details of the aid are already available on their siteand will take care of both alterations and shoe repairs, from a simple hole in jeans to the resoling of a pair of shoes.
“We are aiming for an implementation by mid-October,” predicts Elsa Chassagnette, head of the repair fund. For the moment, the labeling objectives have only been halfway met, with 250 craftsmen having submitted their applications.
This boost, financed thanks to the eco-contribution set up with the textile sector in 2020, should allow everyone to have their clothes repaired by a local craftsman or “in brand repair workshops”, specifies the secretary. of state. One of the fears would be that the mesh on the territory is not fine enough. “Someone shouldn’t have to travel 50 or 100 km to repair their clothes,” predicts Bérangère Couillard. The labels will therefore be accessible without conditions of company size or brand affiliation.
The eco-score, or the promise of more responsible consumption
The ministry’s roadmap also provides for the implementation of an eco-score. By 2024, and on a voluntary basis, companies will have at their disposal a scale allowing them to calculate the ecological score of the garment sold. Among the eight criteria used to calculate this evaluation, appears the reparability of the product. Because a durable garment must also be able to have a second life.
To encourage consumers to rehabilitate their clothes rather than buy them back, “the price of the repair must be less than a third of the purchase price”, insists Bérangère Couillard.
The Secretary of State reminds us: the textile industry might become the second most polluting in France. We must therefore encourage a truly sustainable approach, of sobriety. That doesn’t mean fewer jobs. The aid should also boost the work of tailors and shoemakers, very weakened by ultra-fast fashion and the economic crises.
This textile bonus is inspired by another bonus set up last December for the repair of household appliances: it offers consumers the possibility of repairing an appliance that is no longer under warranty by taking it to a repairer certified “qualiRépar “. The bonus is then deducted directly from the invoice. Recently, this financial assistance has been doubled to 50 euros for a damaged mobile phone, 30 euros for an electric scooter and up to 90 euros for a laptop.
