Tewolde Gebremariam’s legacy is considerable because he made Ethiopian Airlines THE pan-African airline. Today, it serves the main capitals of the world and almost all destinations on the continent, including that of the Indian Ocean. It should be noted that Port-Louis has always refused to grant permission to land to Ethiopian Airlines.
After 37 years with the company, including 11 at its head, Tewolde Gebremariam has just resigned citing health reasons.
He began his career at Ethiopian in 1985 and held numerous management positions in different divisions of the company, which over the years has become a world flagship in the airline industry.
Under his leadership, its fleet has tripled, from 33 aircraft in 2011 to 130 today. « As for the turnover, it went from 1.3 billion dollars in 2011 to 3.9 billion dollars in 2019-2020. The Ethiopian hub in Addis Ababa now serves 120 destinations, compared to 80 in 2010,” recalls our colleagues from Jeune Afrique.
Tewolde Gebremariam was named ‘African CEO of the Year’ and ‘Best African Business Leader’. In 2019 and 2020, he will even be listed among the 100 most influential Africans!
