Online this summer appeared information that partly to blame for the unsuccessful release Cyberpunk 2077 lies with the testing studio Quantic Lab, which misled CD Projekt RED regarding the real state of affairs when working on the project. Edition PC Gamer conducted its own investigation, which confirmed this information.
PC Gamer interviewed several Quantic Lab employees, including former ones. According to their comments, the studio really lied to customers regarding the number of testers. The leaders of Quantic Lab assigned one person to several positions and, in fact, forced them to work at once for four. At the same time, they told partner companies that the team of testers was large.
However, the testing of Cyberpunk 2077 seems to have really taken place with the involvement of a large number of people. It was so attractive to employees that they left other projects (creating a shortage of staff) and came to test the game even from other departments. But in one Quantic Lab, CD Projekt RED nevertheless lied – not all employees had the declared experience. According to a tester who worked on Cyberpunk 2077 in a QA studio, out of 30, only 10 people had testing experience, and out of these ten there were none with more than a year of experience.
CD Projekt RED complained several times regarding Quantic Lab’s work, and Quantic Lab responded with completed minor bug reports to meet daily quotas. This distracted the testers, who were working on higher priority bugs, including those related to the main story missions, which did not allow the game to be completed.
CD Projekt RED does not currently work with Quantic Lab. The contract was not renewed in 2021, although it initially included the possibility of continuing work on updates and expansions of Cyberpunk 2077.
One of the former employees of Quantic Lab said that he would not blame the QA studio for the state of Cyberpunk 2077, because the decision to release the game in this form was still with CD Projekt RED. But he acknowledges the fact that Quantic Lab contributed to the unsatisfactory state of the project at release.
Cyberpunk 2077 was released on December 10, 2020 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. And on February 15, 2022, a game update for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 became available.
