A month ago, it was reported that Microsoft was experimenting with the ability to add tabs to Notepad in Windows 11. Today, the software giant is taking a step forward by making this feature available to users for so they can try it themselves.
To take advantage of this opportunity, however, you’ll need to be a Windows Insider in the Dev channel.
Announcing the test, Microsoft says:
With this update, we’re introducing support for multiple tabs – a much-requested feature from the community – where you can create, manage, and organize multiple files in a single Notepad window! You can also continue working on files in multiple windows by dragging a tab into its own window, and a new application setting lets you customize the default opening of files in new tabs or in a new window.
Microsoft added keyboard shortcuts to support tab management and also made some improvements to handling unsaved files.
The news isn’t all good, however, as Microsoft says it’s aware of a few issues with the new feature.
Some users might encounter problems with certain keyboard shortcuts. We will also continue to optimize performance so that Notepad continues to meet our high standards for performance, reliability, and compatibility.
