Developed by the Croatian team from Croteam – author in particular of the very fun Serious Sam –, The Tales Principle 2 is a game the polar opposite of the studio’s other creations. Focused on reflection, with its complicated puzzles and philosophical reflections, the title is one of the excellent surprises of the end of 2023.
The year 2023 ends in style with a particularly busy month of November for outings. Among these, one game stood out less than the others, despite the fact that it is the sequel to what will undoubtedly remain as the best spiritual sequel to Portal. The Talos Principle 2 is indeed positioned as a puzzle game played in the first person.
The title derives its originality from its universe, which mixes history and science fiction. In the first game, the player played an artificial intelligence forced by an entity named Elohim to solve puzzles in an ancient-inspired world. Very quickly, the player became aware of being a prisoner of an experience, a concept which was reminiscent of Valve’s excellent Portal. The first episode ended with the escape of the player, who had managed to escape from virtual reality. This second game picks up exactly where we left off the adventure. This time, however, you will play as a robot in a material world. And you will discover that the purpose of the entity Elohim was actually to train a new mechanical humanity to repopulate the world following a pandemic. A catchy scenario therefore, but which only really starts at the end of the prologue, at which point you will discover that you are 1K, the “thousandth new human”, destined to repopulate the city of New Jerusalem.
The game universe is still as rich as ever.
Pad in hand, it feels like we’re replaying the first part. And this is very probably the biggest criticism that we will make of this Talos Principle 2 which identically copies the formula of its predecessor, just offering a little more diversity in terms of puzzles and game areas. As in the first part, you will have to play with switches, cubes, fans, projectors and other types of accessories that will allow you to solve environmental puzzles. The puzzles get straight to the point. If you get stuck on one of them, it is generally enough to try a different approach to quickly find the solution and this is what makes the charm of TalOs Principle 2 which does not get stuck in complicated reasoning. Another advantage of the game: to progress in the adventure, you will only have to solve 8 of the 10 puzzles in an area.
Like the first part, The Talos Principle 2 is played in the first person.
So yes, there are some small new features in the gameplay, yes the narration takes a big step forward with the robots, but we must admit, it’s difficult to be surprised by this sequel which follows in the footsteps of its predecessor . The Talos Principle 2 is certainly superior in every way to the first episode, but ultimately it doesn’t bring much new to the table. It’s an excellent reflection and puzzle game but still lacks personality, the complete opposite of Portal. However, we cannot recommend it enough to fans of the genre, who have been on a forced diet for several years, and who will be able to play a big budget puzzle game (double-A) for once. At €39.99, the trip is in any case worth the detour.
Conclusion
Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, The Talos Principle 2 stands out as an excellent puzzle game. The Croteam game is played entirely in the first person. The narration here, however, is much more advanced than in the first opus, and this is without a shadow of a doubt what makes the charm of this episode. For the rest, we find exactly the same formula with puzzles to solve using various objects made available to the player in each level, a colorful universe inspired once once more by the Antique period and grandiose settings. Talos Principle 2 is in every way superior to its predecessor but lacks real new features and above all a more marked personality.
