Released in 2022, The Crackpet Show has established itself as an excellent twin-stick shooter. A year later, its creators are giving us a spin-off of the game with Happy Tree Friends flavor.
You may remember this curious bloody animated web series called Happy Tree Friends, which was a huge success on the Internet in the early 2000s. Adapted several times into a game, the universe of Happy Tree Friends had fallen somewhat into disuse. It’s back with great fanfare today thanks to a small development studio which is delivering us a particularly nervous little independent game…
There isn’t really a storyline, you’ll have to make do with a few pointless cutscenes.
The Crackpet Show: Happy Tree Friends Edition is not strictly speaking a new game but more of a spin-off, or even a skin of an already existing game, called The Crackpet Show. Released in 2022, this rogue lite met with great critical success. It takes the form of a nervous twin stick shooter in which the player must participate in game sessions and progress through an adventure by shooting everything that moves.
The game respects the codes of rogue-lite.
Concretely, we therefore direct one of the nine characters from the animated series through a succession of micro-levels in which we must massacre all the enemies encountered to advance to the next level, and so on until the end boss of the chapter. A run usually lasts no more than 10 minutes. Between each micro-level, the player wins rewards, depending on the path he has chosen: a new weapon, ability, the possibility of buying new objects from a merchant… In short, the codes of rogue lite are respected at the same time. letter.
Those who played the original know exactly what to expect since, as has been said, this game is just a skin of The Crackpet Show. How does the content differ? There are nine playable characters from the series, the narrator is also a character from the series, the original music is on the program, and we are entitled to some small atmospheric additions… And that’s regarding it. In other words, it’s not necessarily worth the detour if you played the first one.
The game is primarily played in co-op.
On the other hand, if you missed this little nugget, this special edition with Happy Tree Friends flavor might well seduce you. Because in itself, it is a very challenging twin stick shooter, much more technical than it seems (and often leaning towards a bullet hell shooter), playable in coop with friends, and which still has a solid lifespan.
So of course, we can be disappointed not to be faced with a 100% new game. But let’s be honest, most of you had completely missed this curiosity anyway. And it must be admitted, the game is rather faithful to the Happy Tree Friends DNA even if we can criticize it for its lack of narration.
So, should we fall for this little title that we weren’t expecting at all? At €19.99, the bill is not very expensive and the title stands out as an excellent cooperative shooter. It’s colorful, bloody, more technical than it seems and ideal for spending two followingnoons with friends. However, we shouldn’t expect too much from him in the long term…
