With Eden Games at the controls, we could expect an excellent racing game. The French development studio has a nice track record to its credit. But it was without counting on a crucial lack of ambition for this game taking place in the universe of the Smurfs, which is satisfied with the minimum union level content.
At first glance, however, Smurfs Kart instantly seduces with its colorful decorations, its rather pretty graphics and its cartoonish graphic style. For a Mariokart-like, the title published by Microids is quite nice. Content level, on the other hand, is a cold shower from the home screen. 3 unique game modes with an uninteresting free mode, a time trial mode which does not bring much originality and a Grand Prix mode which will offer you to chain 3×4 races in various levels inspired by the work of Peyo… Add to that a multiplayer mode without much originality and you get one of the lightest Mariokart clones on the market in terms of content…
The game world is very colorful.
And the bad surprises follow one another, because level gameplay also, it is the disappointment. Pad in hand, the game is not unpleasant to learn: the power-ups are fun, the driving is fun, the sensations of speed are good. On the other hand, there is a real imbalance in the races with power-ups which often give too clear an advantage to the players lagging behind. Another very big problem observed: an almost systematic redirection of your character while running as soon as you approach the edges of the screen… This is a kind of accessibility automatism which can actually cause series of accidents since sometimes it activates for no good reason and pushes you straight into a lake or, on the contrary, prevents you from taking a shortcut. It could have been very nice, but the imbalances of the game, its exacerbated assistantship and the absence of a real single player mode is really detrimental to Smurfs Kart. And that’s a shame, because there really is room for a Mariokart-like and the world of the Smurfs lent itself rather well.
The multiplayer is a bit of a saver.
Clearly, the game is aimed at a young audience. We notice him for his artistic direction and his assistantship. That being said, Smurfs Kart is far from easy. Winning the gold medal in every game will not be easy. Opponents are aggressive and responsive. Ultimately, it is therefore very difficult to know who the game is really aimed at. It is all the more unfortunate that, as we said above, we feel there is real potential there, and the game was above all very pretty. Remains a fun little family arcade racing game, which fortunately has the merit of being sold at a low price. It will indeed cost only € 29.99 to acquire it.
Conclusion
Visually very successful and rather pleasant to handle, Smurfs Kart could have been a real success if only Microids and Eden Games had given themselves the means to succeed. The game’s very light content (only 3 game modes and 12 races + mirrors), its failed driving assistance system and its poor balancing make it a quickly off-putting title. Clearly, the game is intended for a young audience with its colorful universe. However, the difficulty is there. Not sure therefore that he finds his audience. It is all the more regrettable that the universe of Peyo was beautifully transcribed in this video game…
