Test – Little Goody Two Shoes: the new nugget from AstralShift

Little Goody Two Shoes is the prequel to Pocket Mirror, by AstralShift and Square Enix. And fans of the genre have something to enjoy with an adventure perfect for the Halloween season.

Little Goody Two Shoes is a British legend which gave rise to the expression of the same name, which could be translated as “little holy girl”. With the game of the same name, however, we are dealing with a much less perfect and smooth story, full of horror, mystery and moral ambiguity.

Time flies… what are you going to do with it?

In a world graphically reminiscent of the good old animated cartoons of the 90s, we play Élise, a young girl who doesn’t feel at home in a town obsessed with witch hunting… One day, she discovers a pair of shoes buried in his garden, and gradually lets himself be drawn into a dark story of a pact with demonic forces…

Little Goody Two Shoes is a JRPG without combat, but with plenty of opportunities for the main character to die: killer butterflies, witch hunts, starvation, etc. The main gameplay feature of Little Goody Two Shoes is indeed time management. The day is divided into several distinct periods: dawn, morning, afternoon, dusk, evening and the “witching hour”.

From dawn to evening, you manage your time between work, romance and avoiding drawing suspicion on your little person. Concern ? You can only do one activity per period, and you naturally have to manage your hunger! We will therefore have to make choices to advance the adventure.

The game will make you as uncomfortable as Élise in her discovery

In “Witching Hour”, on the other hand, you explore the weirdest forest anyone has ever seen, full of strange dungeons pushing Élise to the brink of madness (there is a mental health system) and leading her every day a little more to make a demonic pact… Will you be tempted, or will you prefer a simple and unpretentious life?

The atmosphere created by both the nostalgic graphic style and a rather masterful soundtrack will not fail to seduce you if you are not averse to Japanese animation. There is even something quite strong in creating an atmosphere that is sometimes so uneasy in horror dungeons with elements normally so familiar and comforting, and the contrast between the day, where one could almost believe oneself in the middle of a film from Studios Ghibli, and at night, where we travel through labyrinths, each one more unhealthy than the other, only reinforces this horrific imagery.

The dungeons take you into psychedelic worlds…

The characters are pleasant, but it is especially Élise who shines with her moral ambiguity and her very particular character. And so much the better, because it’s this character that we control!

Little Goody Two Shoes has ten endings, and like its predecessor, the game encourages you to explore them all, and as the game invites you to make choices in your time management, you will miss out on quite a few endings. content if you limit yourself to a single run. So there is replayability in the air!

The game has a very recognizable retro touch…

On a technical level, Little Goody Two Shoes is everything you would expect from a game created on RPG Maker. The retro graphics are certainly simple (except everything which is drawn in an old Shôjo anime style, i.e. a huge part of the game full of drawings teeming with details) but they are effective, and we are here on a well thought out formula which means that we come across a really well-polished game (at the same time, with RPG Maker, the opposite would have been a little worrying…)

The game is definitely worth its price of €19.99. However, a small note: if you play on a computer, you don’t have a controller, and you refuse to use the old-fashioned directional pad, then know that it is not possible to switch from QWERTY to AZERTY on a computer, nor to change the commands. And if there are two layouts (WASD and the directional pad), you can no longer change them once this one is chosen…

Conclusion

If you are not allergic to Japanese animation, and more specifically to the shoujo style with its huge eyes and its girly side, then we can only recommend Little Goody Two Shoes. The game is a little nugget that goes perfectly with the Halloween atmosphere and a good cup of hot chocolate. The retro side has something very gripping that makes you let yourself be carried away by a story where you should never trust appearances. A game that combines both horror and “good vibes” for a striking contrast! A mix of genres, the title is a real curiosity. Afterwards, you will have to adhere to the very particular graphic style…

We like less:

No ability to change controls during the game

Technically it’s an RPG Maker game

The mix will not work for all players
