TEST Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion: Zack returns with a new face

If you are a PSP owner and like Final Fantasy VIIyou have not missed a famous spin-off, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. The title was born in 2007 and, since time, fans have been waiting for the porting of this adventure in our platforms of the moment. Square Enix finally takes the plunge and adapts this production under a new title, Reunion. The PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC therefore welcome this odyssey, is the game more flashy than before? Let’s talk regarding it !

Square Enix has brilliantly adapted a production that marked an entire generation.

Let’s start with the point put forward by the Japanese firm, the graphics. Indeed, the developers have still racked their brains to modify certain aspects of the old PSP title to obtain a flashy rendering to the image. Thus, the modeling of the characters has been changed, the faces are thinner, the clothes more detailed, the outlines are a little closer to what we can see on the side of Final Fantasy VII Remake. The sets have also been reworked and new elements have been embedded in the frames. It’s clearer, warmer, the colors are more explosive. But the studio does not stop there and adds highlights, as well as very flashy and impressive light effects.

However, there are flaws… The animations in-game are not crazy and are a great reminder that we are dealing with a PSP game. In addition, the cutscenes in CGIwhile beautiful despite age, are a bit dull and grainy because of a stretched and unretouched image. As for the soundtrack, the epic music of yesteryear is entitled to a few adjustments to gently titillate our esgourdes, arrangements are really good. But wait, that’s not all! A complete dubbing, in Japanese or English, is also invited to the party. As you will have understood, it is a real delight for our little ears.

And the grip in all of this? Well, the Japanese giant listened to the community and rectified several binding points. First, the camera is no longer fixed, it can be moved at our discretion. Then the system OCN is still present and is still random, unfortunately. However, to prevent a chain from being disrupted by an unwanted and unpredictable offensive, an action has been added so that the player can trigger his devastating assault at a desired time. In addition, we can now pass the animations, in short, it feels good. Another point and not the least, it is now possible to perform a 5-hit combo, while shortcuts are appearing, to use a Matter for example. All these additions make the clashes more fluid, dynamic and enjoyable ; especially on the side ofOCN.

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion greatly reminds us that we are still rubbing shoulders with a portable game, due to its linearity in progression and various somewhat redundant phases. But Square Enix knew how to brilliantly adapt a production that marked an entire generation by tweaking several points that made fans of yesteryear cringe.
