Some have been waiting for CarPlay, but maybe it’s AirPlay that might be coming to Tesla’s cars. Indeed, the 4.23.0 application contains references to Apple’s audio sharing technology.
A new icon (right).
As indicated by the Tesla_App_iOS account on Twitter, there are indeed references to AirPlay in the code of the application, in particular a rather explicit line: allowsAirPlayForMediaPlayback. The rumor is not new: we were already talking regarding it in June 2022 following a tweet from Elon Musk, who had not yet begun to conscientiously destroy the social network.
AirPlay before CarPlay in Teslas?
Support for AirPlay in vehicles would bring two interesting new features. The first is purely related to audio: the quality in AirPlay is better than with the standard functions of Bluetooth. With blue tooth, the audio is automatically (re)compressed during transmission, and all codecs available for this use involve more or less audible losses. On the contrary, AirPlay is lossless in its two variants. With the first version that appeared in the 2000s, all streams are transmitted with a lossless codec (Apple’s ALAC) at the cost of sometimes high latency. With the more recent version 2 of the standard, the streams are transmitted directly to the receiver, which decompresses the audio directly, without additional losses.
The other related novelty would obviously be to transmit video from a mobile device to the large screen of Tesla vehicles. The ability to mirror the screen of a smartphone or play videos – of course when stationary – would be an interesting advantage to keep busy while charging the vehicle, even if Tesla already offers some applications for this use in its cars.
At the moment, nothing seems in place, and the integration of AirPlay obviously requires an update of the application, but also an update of the software of the car. The (probably) good news is that AirPlay doesn’t require excessive power to operate, so we can hope that Tesla brings Apple’s technology to all its models… if it happens. Finally, note that the application icon has been modified: the red is different and the logo is a little smaller, as noted not a tesla app.
