It is a historic turning point. For the very first time, a fully electric car appears at the top of the world’s best sellers. This feat is achieved by the Tesla Model Y, a compact SUV that has found its audience everywhere since it enjoys great success in the United States as well as in Europe and Asia.
In total, Tesla thus sold 267,200 copies of the Y model in the world in the first quarter, according to the firm JATO Dynamics. It is ahead of no less than four Toyotas, the Corolla (256,400), the Hilux (214,700), the RAV4 (211,000) and the Camry (166,200). This data takes into account sales figures for 53 markets worldwide, as well as estimates for the others.
Over the whole of 2022, the Tesla Model Y ranked third in sales worldwide behind the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla, with 747,000 copies sold, almost doubling its sales compared to the previous year and going as high as to break records in some countries, such as Norway.
