excel Chinese automaker BYDbacked by billionaire Warren Buffett, has established Tesla as the world’s largest seller of electric cars.
BYD revealed sales of 638,157 electric or hybrid passenger cars in the first six months of 2022, according to the company’s disclosure.
This figure represents an increase of regarding 325 percent year-on-year compared to the same period last year.
In June alone, the company sold 133,762 electric or hybrid passenger cars.
In the first half of 2022, BYD sold 323,519 battery electric cars and 314,638 hybrid electric cars.
And BYD pledged, last April, to stop manufacturing operations for internal combustion engine cars – which run on conventional fuels (gasoline and diesel) – permanently.
On the other hand, Tesla delivered a total of 564,743 vehicles in the first six months of the year, according to figures in its first and second quarter reports.
Tesla reports that it faced supply chain challenges and factory closures throughout the year.
Shares of BYD are up 36% since January, and the company has managed to avoid factory closures due to China’s zero-Covid policy, Business Insider reported.
In contrast, Tesla was forced to temporarily close its factory in Shanghai during the outbreak of the Corona virus in the city earlier this year.
