Tesla is able to produce electric vehicles with a range of up to 960 km, but does not consider it necessary to do so

Tesla CEO Elon Musk periodically has to discuss the topic of increasing the range of modern electric vehicles on a single charge, and in this area he continues to adhere to the principle of reasonable sufficiency. Technically, according to him, the company had the opportunity to launch the production of cars with a power reserve of up to 960 km a year ago, but there is no particular need for this, according to the billionaire.

The discussion on this topic once once more arose on the pages of Twitter, as explains Electrek. One of the connoisseurs of Tesla products asked Elon Musk how he assesses the appearance on the market of the Lucid Air electric car with a power reserve of more than 800 km. The head of Tesla calmly replied that technically the Model S electric car with a power reserve of 960 km might have been made a year ago, but such a step was not justified in terms of consumer qualities of the car. As Elon Musk explained, the increased mass of an electric car due to the battery would negatively affect its dynamics, control and energy efficiency. The excess mass, according to Musk, would have to be transported in vain 99.9% of the time. According to him, even a power reserve of 640 km is redundant for the needs of most car owners.

The most interesting thing is that such statements, which have already been made by the head of Tesla last year, do not in any way affect the company’s intentions to give the second generation Roadster a range of 960 km, and this despite the fact that the car is positioned as very dynamic, capable of speeds up to 400 km / h and change the “first hundred” in 1.9 seconds. And yet, in the recent history of Tesla development, there is an example of the refusal to further increase the range of an electric vehicle. Last year, the company updated the Model S sedan, and the older version was supposed to be the Plaid + modification, which was credited with a power reserve of regarding 832 km, but Tesla later abandoned the idea of its release, leaving only one version of the Model S Plaid with a power reserve of 624 km.
