BERLIN, Aug 23 (Archyde.com) – Tesla TSLA.O has lowered production target at its German factory to 4,350 per week in July and August, following hitting 5,000 per week in March, and plans to cut it further, according to a Business Insider report citing internal documents and unnamed sources.
The US automaker posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, at the end of March that it had hit 5,000 cars a week at the plant in Gruenheide, near Berlin , but workers who declined to be named told Business Insider that it was a one-time operation and that average production since then has been much lower, according to the article.
In June, Tesla told (link) that it was hiring fewer temporary workers than at the start because they were no longer needed, but that its production targets were on track.
Business Insider said images showing Tesla’s internal workflow software indicated the US electric vehicle maker had lowered its target for July and August to 870 cars per day.
Even that goal was not always met, with only 692 cars produced on July 25 and 806 on July 28, according to software photos published in the report.
The internal target has since been scaled back to 750 cars per day, or less than 4,000 per week, the report said, citing unnamed factory employees.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Archyde.com. Business Insider said the company did not respond to a series of questions regarding the factory’s production.
The automaker has cut prices (link) repeatedly in the United States, China and other markets since late last year, and increased rebates and other incentives to reduce inventory, as tries to protect itself once morest competition and economic uncertainty.
Tesla announced in July (link) its intention to increase the capacity of the Gruenheide plant to 1 million cars per year, but did not provide a timetable and previously declined to comment on when. the factory would reach 6,000 cars per week.
Production hit 4,000 cars a week (link) in late February, ahead of a production schedule seen by Archyde.com, but appears to have slowed since, according to the Business Insider report.
