Tesla is strengthening its network of Superchargers in France. The high point of this expansion is the inauguration of the first V4 Supercharger in Riom, Puy-de-Dôme. Accessible to all electric cars, this new charging point represents a strategic turning point for the manufacturer. What changes does this new generation of charging stations bring?
As summer begins, Tesla is rolling out a series of Superchargers to accommodate vacationers on their way to their vacation destinations. Le Bosc with 16 terminals, Rodez with 6, Albi and Nantes Atlantis with 12 each, and finally Limoges E.Leclerc which has 16 terminals.

But the focus is particularly on a specific deployment: the first V4 Supercharger in France. Located in Riom, in Puy-de-Dômeat the intersection of the A71 and A89 motorways, this new Supercharger, open to all electric cars and not exclusively to Teslas, offers 12 charging points.
This deployment brings to nearly 2,000 the number of Superchargers distributed in more than 150 stations on French territory.
So what does this Supercharger V4 bring compared to the previous generation?
The Riom station is not yet completely finished, the photovoltaic shade house intended for self-consumption being still under construction. Eventually, 8 additional terminals will complete the installation.
On the charging speed side, no major change in theory. Tesla cars, whether 150kW or 250kW, run on a 400V platform.
As we had noticed, there have undoubtedly been some changes. Without going into details, what might this mean for users?
In reality, not much. Electric car charging will still be limited to 250 kW on Teslas, and around 200 kW on cars from other manufacturers. This difference is explained by the fact that Tesla does not follow the CCS standard by pushing the maximum intensity from 500 to 600 amps, unlike other manufacturers, which allows it to benefit from these 50 kW of additional power.
On the other hand, V4 Superchargers still limit the charging of certain cars such as the Kia EV6, Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, equipped with an E-GMP platform in 800 volt architecture.
However, V4 Superchargers might offer faster charging speed than V3 in some cases, especially in the event of station congestion.
A series of significant improvements in terms of accessibility and adaptability for all types of electric vehicles
These new V4 terminals also incorporate a larger stall with a longer charging cable. It is an essential element for the new Tesla Superchargers, because the manufacturer is now opening its network to electric vehicles of other brands, whose charging port (equipped with a CCS combo socket) can be located opposite the usual location on Teslas.
Finally, the V4 includes a longer parking space that allows parking a car with a trailer or a motorhomewhich should also facilitate the charging experience for owners of larger vehicles, such as the Model X or the future Cybertruck.
