TeslaS Cybertruck Faces Another Recall: Faulty Exterior Panels
Tesla (TSLA-0.78%) has announced its eighth recall for the Cybertruck, this time due to perhaps hazardous exterior panels. The issue involves the stainless-steel exterior trim, specifically the “cant rail,” wich may delaminate and detach from the vehicle.
Costco demands price cuts from Chinese suppliers as trade tensions escalate and import costs rise
According to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Governance (NHTSA), a detached cant rail could become a road hazard, increasing the risk of accidents for other drivers. The recall potentially affects almost all Cybertrucks sold since deliveries officially began in November 2023. Of the 46,096 units produced until February 27th, it is estimated that about one percent have this defect. Cox Automotive estimates 38,965 vehicles sold in 2024.
Tesla stated in the recall notice that a solution was not yet implemented at its Austin,Texas factory as of March 18th. However, thay plan to begin installing the fix “on or around” the Friday following that date for vehicles in production. Units already manufactured but still in Tesla’s possession will also be retrofitted.
The company became aware of the issue in January. While there have been 151 warranty claims that *may* be related, Tesla reports that the defect has not yet led to any collisions or injuries. Addressing the issue proactively, Tesla will replace the cant rail assembly with a more robust part free of charge. Notification letters to owners are expected to be sent out on May 19th.
Battery technology is also undergoing changes in the $80,000 Cybertruck. According to The Information, Tesla’s senior director of 4680 cells said that the trucks will use dry cathodes moving forward, a change potentially aimed at reducing production costs.
This recall adds to a growing list of challenges for Tesla.
“takedown Tesla” protests have been organized against Musk, while critical owners of Tesla stock — and other investors fearing a crash — have been selling their shares.Acts of vandalism against Tesla facilities and vehicles have become more frequent, even pushing Tesla out of a major Canadian auto show whose organizers were worried about backlash.

A piece detaching from a vehicle at highway speeds could easily cause an accident, endangering other drivers. the fact that this recall affects nearly all Cybertrucks sold as deliveries began is a critically important concern. It points to a potential flaw in the design or manufacturing process that needs urgent attention.
